Long description: |
This collection of research on the subject of tungsten in the geo-environment presents a unique opportunity for academic, industrial and regulatory groups to have at their disposal current research that augments the decision-making knowledge base on the sustainable use of this unique metal. Since the invention of the incandescent bulb, the unique properties of tungsten and tungsten-based materials have been capitalized on for a number of uses. Interestingly, in some recent cases tungsten uses are distributive, in that they represent direct deposition of tungsten and tungsten-based materials into soils or waters. The underlying premise for designing for distributive uses of tungsten was that tungsten was insoluble and non-reactive in the geo-environment, as, until recently, little was known about tungsten’s geo-environmental behavior. Dermatas and colleagues found tungsten to be quite soluble and potentially reactive in the geo-environment, thus initiating a string of research that led to the present collection.
