Long description: Concurrently collected ambient air data for a range of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) at the continental scale are compared and analysed. Samples were collected using a passive air sampling system using polyurethane foam disks, which were set up in countries across Europe, exposed for six weeks and returned to the laboratory for analysis. Samplers were set up in remote, rural, and urban locations in 22 countries. Calculated air concentrations were broadly in line with those obtained by other techniques for both compound classes and The geographical distribution reflected regional emission patterns and highlighted local sources. The implications for sources are discussed.
