Short description: |
This four-year large-scale demonstration, paid for by the European Community, planted trees and
grasses for fuel on ten “brownfield” sites in the North East of England. Fuel crops included:
• Short-rotation coppice (SRC) – willow trees cut regularly that re-grow from the base
• Miscanthus – elephant grass, a type of tall Chinese grass that looks like sugar cane
• Reed canarygrass - a tall grass common in British wetlands
• Switchgrass - a tall grass from the American prairies
