This application allows the exploration of Corine land cover datasets together with in-situ data which was collected by Eurostat as part of the LUCAS field surveys.
LUCAS (European Land Use/Cover Area Frame Statistical Survey) is a project managed by Eurostat. Its main objective is to obtain harmonised information on land cover/land use and on landscape features with satisfactory precision at EU level by using an area frame survey (sample of geo-referenced points surveyed in situ by surveyors). The scope of LUCAS is to allow to describe land use/cover and its changes and to monitor landscape evolution. It also aims at collecting territorial information facilitating the analysis of the interactions between agriculture, environment and countryside. LUCAS data will be the main in-situ land use/cover data source for various activities on EU level and should therefore maintain the main characteristics of the data collection methods over time and allow easy integration with other data sources, e.g. CORINE.
LUCAS is an area frame survey. Such a data collection approach is used for collecting information on land cover and land use and establishing time series on their changes mainly on European scale. Its implementation has different steps: first a hypothetical grid is laid over the EU territory. The grid nodes are super-imposed over aerial photos and satellite images, with the land cover on these points photo-interpreted and pre-classified ('stratification'). For receiving the necessary detailed classification and avoiding errors due to photo-interpretation, a sample of these points is physically surveyed on the ground. The results, which the surveyors report to the office, are combined with the results of the stratification, for calculating area estimates on the land cover and land use classes all over Europe.
LUCAS data used in this map are extracted from the surveys carried out in 2001 and 2006.
