Long description: |
The UBA is the central federal advisory authority on environmental protection in Germany. Established 1974 as an independent federal authority the UBA has the following primary functions:Scientific support for the federal government Establishing and running an information system for environmental planning, as well as an environmental documentation centre, measuring large-scale air pollution and providing information to the public and making available central servicesand assistance for departmental research and for the co-ordination of federal environmental research, supporting the assessment of the environmental impact of action taken by the federal government. The UBA has long taken an international outlook in its work, exchanging information not only with other national agencies, but actively promoting international networking on a bilateral and multilateral basis. The UBA initiated, and co-ordinated, one of the first networks on contaminated land issues in Europe. From 1996 to 1998 the Concerted Action on Risk Assessment for Contaminated Land (CARACAS) which was funded under the 4th EESD Framework Program of the European Commission. When this project terminated work in June 1998, its expertise and the knowledge of the CARACAS network was taken seamlessly over to the ongoing CLARINET regulators and scientists network (Contaminated Land Rehabilitation Network for Environmental Technologies). For contaminated land and groundwater, its other international networking interests include: close co-operation with the US Environmental Protection Agency, NATO/CCMS Pilot Studies, the Common Forum on Contaminated Land, and the Ad Hoc Contaminated Land Working Group. Currently UBA is co-ordinating the EUGRIS project, is member of the co-ordination team for the Concerted Action on Brownfield and Economic Regeneration Network CABERNET and participant of the RESCUE project (Regeneration of European Sites in Cities and Urban Environments).
