Long description: |
The objective of this report is to provide good practice guidance on S/S techniques to encourage the effective use of S/S in appropriate circumstances by itself or as part of a remedial strategy.
It provides guidance on the S/S of soil and soil-like materials, including sludges, and may be applicable to the technical aspects of the treatment of other waste streams by S/S.
The research was guided by an expert steering committee and comprised a number of key tasks:-
„h literature review of the science behind S/S for treating inorganic and organic contaminants;
„h consultation with experts in the UK and abroad on S/S remediation, including a mission visit to the USA;
„h review of mechanisms that may lead to failure of S/S treated soil and waste;
„h review of testing protocols currently used and identify the key issues associated with verifying S/S remediation, with particular regard to durability; and
„h establish a framework, including decision-making flow charts, for the use of S/S technologies for the remediation of contaminated soil.
