In Northern Ireland, as with the rest of Ireland, groundwater occurs below the land surface in most places. However it will not always be available for use for a variety of reasons some of which are mentioned in the following section. Even where groundwater is not readily exploitable, protection of that groundwater still needs to be a consideration due to the unique nature of this resource.
Deposits left during the last ice age and more recently, which mantle more than 90% of the land area, play an important role in the hydrogeology of Northern Ireland. In particular, glacial till deposits are widespread and influence both recharge to and vulnerability of groundwater in underlying aquifers.
