Short description: The development of cost-effective land and nutrient management options to reduce soil and (phosphorus) P transfer from diffuse sources requires accurate identification of areas with a high risk of contributing to overall P load, a combination of the relative contribution of natural geographic factors and agricultural management factors influencing the transport of soluble and particulate-bound P within catchments. An EU project (DESPRAL) is investigating the use a simple environmental soil P test to determine the potential risk of soil and P transfer in land runoff under a range of soil types, land management practices and P inputs. The aim is to incorporate the test into a procedure to identify priority areas for management actions at the farm and catchment scale required under the EU Water Framework Directive.
