Short description: The Zn – Cu mine at Kristineberg, northern Sweden, was chosen as field site for a national research programme for the development of safe methods for remediation. At this site, soil and water covers are used as passive prevention systems, designed to minimize oxygen intrusion into pyrite rich tailings, which monitoring has shown to be effective. Studies of pit lakes are also included in the programme, being concentrated on four lakes that differ with respect to water stratification, pH and oxygen distribution.
