Short description: IGN creates and diffuses geographical maps. 
Long description: IGN has a role of public utility for: - leading the research projects in the geographical field of information, - ensures the initial and continuous training of its agents, - and of holding up to date institutional geographical documentation. Beyond these transverse activities, it has the fundamental role to ensure the production, maintenance and the geographical diffusion of information of reference in France. The Institute is in charge of the elaboration of the Geographical Reference frame on a Large Scale (RGE®) * by integrating bench-mark data, resulting from its own producing bases or coming from other providers. In prolongation of its missions of public utility, IGN carries out activities of added value and provisions of services by setting up in particular partnerships, thus playing a federator part in the development of the geographical downstream sector of information.
