Short description: The Conference on “Integrated Water Management of Transboundary Catchments”, held in Venice on 24-25-26 March 2004 was a successful initiative within the TRANSCAT Project. The Conference aimed to connect TRANSCAT with EU institutions involved in the process of implementing the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and in particular with those activities related to the development of a “Common Strategy on the Implementation of the Water Framework Directive”, which were initiated at the informal meeting of EU Water Directors and the Norwegian Water Director in Paris 23-24 October 2000. A second objective of this conference was to improve information sharing and the dissemination of the knowledge and experience derived in the broad context of environmental and socio-economic research, supporting the synergy between the TRANSCAT project and other previous and ongoing international projects. For this reason, FEEM proposed involving the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science in Europe (ROSTE) owing to its wide research programme developed on hydrological resources. The conference offered the basis for a future collaboration with UNESCO, especially in the context of South Eastern Europe river basin management.
