Short description: EXTRACT: European Directive 2001/42/EC on the assessment of the effects of certain plans and programmes on the environment came into effect in July 2001. This Directive was transposed into domestic legislation across the UK in July 2004 and requires the undertaking of Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) of certain plans and programmes prior to their adoption. SEA requires the consideration of significant effects which may arise from implementing a plan in relation to 12 identified environmental factors, namely biodiversity, flora, fauna, population, human health, soil, air, water, material assets, climatic factors, cultural heritage and landscape. This research project provides detailed guidance for SEA practitioners on how to consider three of these factors: air, water and soil. It builds upon guidance already available to support the legislation. The guidance can be accessed as www.seaguidance.org.uk; the background research reports for this project can be downloaded below
