Project objectives:
Today most of us perceive brownfields as a legacy of the past. Yet our urban landscape expands at an ever increasing rate and we travel ever increasing distances across this landscape. The concept of “zero waste” has ushered in a paradigm shift in attitudes to resource use. The same paradigm shift is long overdue in attitudes to land use. HOMBRE seeks to bring about and enable a paradigm shift towards “zero brownfields”, considering both the rehabilitation of our legacy of brownfields and the prevention of future brownfields
|
Project
Summary:
The project is based on the ambition of reducing the number of problem brownfield sites to zero, and how that might be achieved using four simple “zero-Brownfield” concepts:
1. The importance of prevention of future Brownfield land, and where land is already Brownfield, it does not remain at this stage for long
2. Identifying interim land use which might both treat and provide value for a brownfield site , if it cannot be brought back into permanent re-use immediately; for example as an urban park or for larger sites producing renewable energy.
3. Combining remediation with other useful environmental processes may make remediation more cost-effective, for example, in the Netherlands there is great interest in combining the cleaning of groundwater with subsurface heating and cooling systems to reduce energy bills and greenhouse gas emissions.
4. More intelligent design for Brownfield management for sustainable development benefits. Society has an important stake in zero Brownfields. With this stake come benefits and responsibilities for many stakeholders, who should therefore have an input to decision making.
HOMBRE will provide the technical and scientific backbone to support the delivery and implementation of these aspirations.
